UPS working mode and principle diagram

UPS working mode and principle diagram

2025-09-25

Working on a computer room monitoring project and need to connect the room's power distribution cabinets and UPS power supplies to the monitoring system.

The diagram below shows the UPS operating principle. Let's take a look at how a UPS works, under what conditions, and to what mode.

I. Operation

1. First, two power inputs are connected. One power input passes through the rectifier switch and reaches the rectifier. The rectifier converts AC power to DC power, and then the DC power is split into two paths. One path passes through the battery switch to charge the battery bank, putting the battery in a float charge state. The other DC power path reaches the inverter. The inverter's main function is to convert DC power to AC power. The AC power passes through the static selector switch and then through the load output switch to power the load.

2. The other power input is divided into a bypass input and a maintenance bypass input. The bypass input also passes through the static switch to the load output switch to power the load. The maintenance bypass directly connects to the load without passing through the load switch.

II. Mode Conversion

1. When using the UPS, except for the maintenance bypass switch, which remains open, all other UPS switches must be connected.

2. When the mains power input is present, or the primary power source is normal, power flows through the rectifier, inverter, static switch, output switch, and load.

When the primary power source fails and the system loses power, the battery-inverter mode operates as follows: battery → battery switch → inverter → static switch → load switch → load, with the inverter converting DC power to AC.

3. When the inverter fails, the static switch automatically connects the bypass input, disconnecting the primary power source. This allows power to be supplied to the load through the load switch.

4. When performing UPS maintenance, the load switch must be disconnected and the maintenance bypass must be closed. Only the maintenance bypass switch should be closed, while all other switches are disconnected. This provides temporary power while UPS maintenance is performed.

UPS is a highly recommended uninterruptible power supply with a wide range of applications, and mastering the necessary knowledge is essential.
